LIFE AFTER THE PANDEMIC

This past year has been full of unexpected changes for all of us in almost every aspect of life. Due to the Covid-19 pandemic and other issues, many of us have faced industry changes from delays in shipping, availability of products (from toilet paper to pool pumps!) and we became acutely aware of how many moving parts comprise the systems we rely on. While these issues seem to be beginning a path to resolution, there is still a strain that is present on our industry as a whole.

So…What is shaping the 2021 pool season and why is it important that pool owners act early to ensure their summer fun is not delayed?

Covid-19

Although it seems we are seeing a light at the end of the pandemic these days, the effects of the past year will not be easily erased. Many equipment manufacturing facilities both abroad and domestic have experienced a slowing in manufacturing due to staffing restrictions and sickness. This slow to manufacturing has resulted in low inventory of many of the parts and equipment your pools rely on to operate in perfect condition. We are urging our customers to consider opening early for this reason, early opening means that we can stay a few steps ahead of any possible equipment malfunctions that require parts or a total replacement. We don’t want our customers back yard fun to be delayed once the much-anticipated summer weather comes.

Hurricane Aftermath

Due to Hurricane Laura, a major pool chemical manufacturing plant went down in flames this past year. This plant, located in Louisiana, supplied over 60% of the domestic chlorine-based chemicals for the United States. Due to this, chemical prices have increased substantially, and demand will be high. At Northstar we have ordered a large quantity of chemicals early and developed some alternative options to ensure your pool is clear all season long. For customers with chlorine pools, this may be the season to consider a chlorinator or addition of a secondary sterilization system such as UV or O-zone which may decrease the chlorine demand of the pool.

Texas Under Ice

We all know that Texas is usually a hot place so when bizarre winter weather hit, the state was totally unprepared. In an area where swimming pools never close, ice buildup and freezing temperatures caused immense damage to pools and equipment. In an already stressed manufacturing and distribution climate, this change of climate did little to help.  Our suppliers have notified us of equipment shortages due to the pandemic and demand from Texas, urging us to get our orders in early before stocks run dry. At Northstar we have pre-stocked some high demand items, as much as budget would allow, but this may not be enough. With your help and early openings, we may be able to avoid issues surrounding equipment and part availability.

Getting an early start on this pool season may be the best way that pool owners can insurance for backyard summer fun! As always, we are doing our best to ensure that we can be there for you and all of your pool and spa needs this season!
